Your Summer Anchor

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” Hebrews 6:19

We all love the summer! A time for family and for vacation, trips to the beach and to the pool, and a time to refresh ourselves getting some rest and relaxation outdoor listening to the beautiful sounds of nature like birds chirping, a light summer rain shower, a babbling brook in the forest, or the peaceful waves of the ocean lapping up on the sand.

It’s times like these we like to recall in our minds the beautiful moments of peace when we’re stuck in the middle of a wintry January blizzard, or a huge job deadline, or watching over a loved one in the hospital, or even a chaotic family disaster!

But do we ever recall on the peace that only God can give when He made the promise of hope as an anchor of the soul as Jesus entered the inner sanctuary of God’s presence. There should be no hint of wavering from the promise of God’s will in our lives!

Take for example an anchor on a boat or a ship, what is it’s purpose? An anchor is attached to the boat and is used to prevent it from drifting due to the wind or current. It is usually tossed into the water when a boat is in shallow enough waters for the anchor to reach rocks or sand. Setting it down only happens once the boat arrives at it’s destination.  It fixes the vessel to a certain position and keeps it there.

An anchor is also used as a symbol for stability, strength, and safety. For many, this metaphor of an anchor is symbolic of our feelings when we leave a stagnant part our lives and set sail on a new journey. Putting down an anchor represents the safe end of a long journey.

The anchor also represents the unfailing hope of all who believe in Christ. It can be used to signify ‘fresh start’ or ‘hope’, as in The Bible, Hebrews 6:19-20: ” We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain. Jesus has entered there on our behalf as a forerunner, because He has become a high priest forever.”

So this summer, if you get a chance, take a tour on a ship to see it’s anchor or do a study or investigation on anchors – their history and purpose. You’ll be amazed at it’s size and the various shapes they come in depending on the vessel it needs to hold secure!
